N OTES TO THE C ONSOLIDATED F INANCIAL S TATEMENTS Dar Al-Maal Al-Islami Trust 23 IFRS 16 Leases: IFRS 16 will affect primarily the accounting by lessees and will result in the recognition of almost all leases on balance sheet. The standard removes the current distinction between operating and financing leases and requires recognition of an asset (the right to use the leased item) and a financial liability to pay rentals for virtually all lease contracts. An optional exemption exists for short term and low-value leases. The income statement will also be affected because the total expense is typically higher in the earlier years of a lease and lower in later years. Additionally, operating expense will be replaced with interest and depreciation, so key metrics like EBITDA will change. Operating cash flows will be higher as cash payments for the principal portion of the lease liability are classified within financing activities. Only the part of the payments that reflects interest can continue to be presented as operating cash flows. The accounting by lessors will not significantly change. Some differences may arise as a result of the new guidance on the definition of a lease. Under IFRS 16, a contract is, or contains, a lease if the contract conveys the right to control the use of an identified asset for a period of time in exchange for consideration. The standard is effective for annual periods beginning on or after 1 January 2019. The Group is assessing the material impact of these new requirements, but does not expect any. Disclosure Initiative – Amendments to IAS 7: Going forward, entities will be required to explain changes in their liabilities arising from financing activities. This includes changes arising from cash flows (e.g. drawdowns and repayments of borrowings) and non-cash changes such as acquisitions, disposals, accretion of interest and unrealised exchange differences. Changes in financial assets must be included in this disclosure if the cash flows were, or will be, included in cash flows from financing activities. This could be the case, for example, for assets that hedge liabilities arising from financing liabilities. Entities may include changes in other items as part of this disclosure, for example by providing ‘net debt’ reconciliation. However, in this case the changes in the other items must be disclosed separately from the changes in liabilities arising from financing activities. The Group is assessing the impact if this new standard but does not expect any material impact. Recognition of Deferred Tax Assets for Unrealised Losses - Amendments to IAS 12: Amendments made to IAS 12 in January 2016 clarify the accounting for deferred tax where an asset is measured at fair value and that fair value is below the asset’s tax base. Specifically, the amendments confirm that: a temporary difference exists whenever the carrying amount of an asset is less than its tax base at the end of the reporting period; an entity can assume that it will recover an amount higher than the carrying amount of an asset to estimate its future taxable profit; where the tax law restricts the source of taxable profits against which particular types of deferred tax assets can be recovered, the recoverability of the deferred tax assets can only be assessed in combination with other deferred tax assets of the same type; tax deductions resulting from the reversal of deferred tax assets are excluded from the estimated future taxable profit that is used to evaluate the recoverability of those assets. The amendment is effective for accounting periods on or after 1 January 2017. The Group is assessing the impact if this new standard but does not expect any material impact. There are no other applicable new standards and amendments to published standards or IFRIC interpretations that have been issued but are not effective for the first time for the Group’s financial year beginning on 1 January 2017 that would be expected to have a material impact on the consolidated financial statements of the Group Consolidation (a) Subsidiaries Subsidiaries are all entities (including structured entities) over which the Group has control. The Group controls an entity when the Group is exposed to, or has rights to, variable returns from its involvement with the entity and has the ability to affect those returns through its power over the entity. Subsidiaries are fully consolidated from the date on which control is transferred to the Group. They are de-consolidated from the date on which control ceases. The Group applies the acquisition method to account for business combinations. The consideration transferred for the acquisition of a subsidiary is the fair values of the assets transferred, the liabilities incurred to the former owners of the acquiree and the equity interests issued by the Group. The consideration transferred includes the fair value of any asset or liability resulting from a contingent consideration arrangement. Identifiable assets acquired and liabilities and contingent liabilities assumed in a business combination are measured initially at their fair values at the acquisition date. The Group recognises any non-controlling interest in the acquiree on an acquisition-by-acquisition basis, either at fair value or at the non-controlling interest’s proportionate share of the recognised amounts of acquiree’s identifiable net assets. Acquisition-related costs are expensed as incurred. If the business combination is achieved in stages, the acquisition date carrying value of the acquirer’s previously held equity interest in the acquiree is re- measured to fair value at the acquisition date; any gains or losses arising from such re-measurement
